Window Periods: How Long to Wait Before Testing

Testing too early misses real infections. Testing too late lets them spread to the next partner. HIV via the standard 4th-generation lab test (antigen-antibody) is detectable as early as 18 days after exposure for most people, with full coverage by 6 weeks per CDC HIV testing guidance. Rapid blood-based tests using antibody-only chemistry generally need 6 to 12 weeks for reliable results.

When one test is not the whole answer
