The stages of Syphilis
Syphilis is a bacterial sexually-transmitted disease that has several stages. Once infected, a person goes through a number of stages that are made up of various signs and symptoms. Here they are:
1. During the first stage of syphilis, the infection triggers one symptom --- a small, round, and painless sore that is known as a chancre. It is an ulcer that may appear in the genital region, mouth, or anus. It will persist for about three to four weeks and just disappear even if you did not get any kind of treatment for it.
2. If you fail to get treatment for syphilis, the disease will progress to the secondary stage. The following are the common symptoms:
- joint pains
- hair loss
- flu-like symptoms
- swollen lymph nodes
- rash on the soles of the feet and palms of the hand
These may persist for up to two years.
3. The third stage of syphilis is very dangerous since the infection can reach the important body organs such as the heart and the brain. This may kick in after about five to twenty years since first exposure to the bacteria.
It is important to get treated as early as you can to avoid these serious syphilis complications.
