Health officials in the United States recently announced that the number of syphilis cases in gay men has increased significantly over the past year.
The statistics on infections
Based on information and data gathered by the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System in April, the year 2013 saw 5.3 incidents of primary and secondary syphilis every 100,000 people. That is a more than 100% increase from the year 2000's 2.1 incidents every 100,000 people.
- The increase was comprised mostly of men, especially among bisexual men, gay men, and other men who engaged in sexual contact with other men.
- The rise in syphilis rates has caused so much concern from the Centers for Disease Control, STD prevention division.
- Back in 2012, more than 80% of the 9,000 syphilis cases in the country were found to be among bisexual and gay men. Today, that number has more than doubled.
- Just last year, over 16,000 cases of syphilis were reported, with more than 90% of them in bisexual and gay men.
Health officials are not entirely sure what the explanations are for this outbreak. They want to study it more so as to find the most appropriate solutions to stop this spread.
