Doctors in Queensland are alarmed after finding out that there is a significant increase in the number of HIV cases in the region.
Over the past 12 months, a 34 percent spike in HIV notifications has been documented by the HIV Foundation Queensland. That number includes 93 men and women who have been diagnosed this year.
According to Dr. Andrew Redmond, the findings are only provisional at this point in time and they expect to gather more reliable information and data by the end of 2014.
Solving the HIV conundrum
He added that they are going to test groups of people that are considered to be high-risk and determine some conclusions from there. He said they really want to know what's behind the rise in HIV rates.
Based on their reports, the majority of the new HIV victims are Australian-born males who engage in sexual relations with other males. And about 90 percent of all homosexuals in Queensland are positive for HIV. This number has doubled over the past ten years.
Just last year, Queensland offered rapid HIV tests for free, the first state in Australia to do it. These rapid HIV tests were able to provide test results within 30 minutes.
