There are people who live this kind of life: sleeping with random people that they meet, having multiple sex partners and one-night stands, and just enjoying the crazy, single life. What if one day they decide that they want to change?
It is never too late to get back on track and reevaluate your life. I mean, while sleeping around can give certain people the excitement that they need, it puts you at risk of acquiring various kinds of diseases. Sexually-transmitted diseases or STDs are very common, and the number of people infected with them has increased significantly over the years.
One of the most popular of the bunch is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV. It is a virus that impairs the proper functioning of the human body’s immune system. As time goes on, the virus will attack one organ after another, resulting to the deterioration and eventual destruction of the body.
How is HIV transmitted?
HIV is transmitted in the following ways:
From an HIV-infected woman to her baby
Through sexual intercourse
Through transfusion of HIV-infected blood
Through the use of needles already used by an HIV patient
Why undergo HIV screening?
HIV screening is important because it detects the presence of the virus in an individual’s body. It can tell us how severe the disease has become, and how the person’s antibodies are responding. HIV is a disease that we should not just ignore, and we have to help those that are at risk of it.
There are many methods of HIV screening. Two of the widely-used are called the Western Blot Tests and the ELISA. They are diagnostic procedures that medical professionals have been using for years now, and they have proven to be precise and accurate when diagnosing HIV.
In ELISA, a blood sample of the patient is needed to determine if there are HIV antibodies present. It is a very common procedure all over the world and is recommended by doctors and other workers in the field.
Another method used is called the Radioimmuniprecipitation Assay, also known as RIPA. It makes use of a very powerful equipment to diagnose a person. It is quite expensive and only licensed and expert laboratory technicians are allowed to perform it. It also takes a while to get the results.
In the developing countries, the Rapid Latex Agglutination Assay is very common because it is cheaper compared to the other methods. It is a blood test that can determine if you are HIV positive or negative without all the high-tech, expensive testing tools and facilities.
HIV is a disease that we should pay attention on. It has already taken the lives of a huge number of people across the globe because of lack of awareness and information about it. We should all strive to spread the word on how to prevent and fight it.
