The Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV is a notorious sexually-transmitted disease that is caused by a virus that attacks the immune system. If it is not detected and treated right away, it can progress to AIDS and bring about a load of complications and even death.
The History of HIV
The history of HIV/AIDS is traced back to many decades ago. The virus is said to have mutated from the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus or SIV, which was common among non-human primates a long time ago.
More research and studies found out that the first HIV-1 infections were passed on from gorillas and chimpanzees to human beings. There were also findings that showed the transmission of HIV-2 from sooty mangabeys in the Western African region to humans.
Then, sometime after that, it was believed that only homosexual men could get infected with HIV. That is where the stigma attached to gay men and HIV that we have today came from.
Fortunately, as more research and experiments are being completed over the years, we know more about the virus and that it can infect literally anyone, including females.
Hopefully, as more findings come about in the coming years, people will become more aware and able to protect against HIV and AIDS.
