In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been alarmed with the increasing number of men diagnosed with gonorrhea. These men are mostly homosexuals who engage in men having sex with men sex or MSM.  Aside from gonorrhea, other sexually transmitted infections are also on the rise such as chlamydia and syphilis.

Gonorrhea and Homosexuality

The CDC research

The research team of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tried to establish some facts hence they surveyed 12 areas in the US. The survey was conducted from 2010 to 2013. The sampling was done using Gallup opinion polling and census to determine the respective participants and the size of the participants.

The result of CDC poll about Gonorrhea

For every 100,000 MSM, at least 1.169.7 has gonorrhea in 2010. The following year, the number of gonorrhea cases went up to 1,474.4 and the following year, in 2013, it went up to 3,400. The continuous rising trend in the number of gonorrhea cases alarmed the CDC, prompting them to further investigate the cause of such rise.

Possible causes of gonorrhea infecting more men and MSM

-        These MSM doesn’t want to get tested in fear of being stereotyped or judged hence they engage with sexual activities not knowing they are infected, infecting others in the process

-        These MSM doesn’t have money to get tested hence they engage with sexual activities not knowing they are infected, infecting others in the process

-        These MSM continue to engage in risky sexual behavior with stranger sexual partners because of online dating sites and smartphone applications that influence them such as Grindr.

-        These men are no longer afraid of sexually transmitted infections because they believe these are easy to treat and can be treated anytime they want to

How can you protect yourself if you are an MSM?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s advice at the moment to reduce cases of gonorrhea among MSM is to educate them.  Using condom is also highly encouraged because it can protect them from getting infected. For people with high risk of getting gonorrhea, it is also recommended to get tested as soon as possible. The CDC believes that if these cases get treated, it will lessen chances of transmitting the disease to others.

Gonorrhea Treatment for MSM

Gonorrhea can be easily treated especially if diagnosed early. A prescription of antibiotics that is administered through injection is used to treat gonorrhea. There are some who opt for oral treatment and take it in its pill form. Gonorrhea can be treated in 7 days provided that the patient will be taking the drugs regularly and will abstain from sexual activities during the duration of the treatment. After the treatment, it is also best to get tested again to make sure that you are now free of the infection. If you have a partner, ask your partner to get tested as well. If you will continue to be sexually active after your treatment, make sure to do regular self-test for all sexually transmitted infections.
