Looking for an HIV cure
For so many years now, medical researchers are looking for a cure that can completely cure a person infected with HIV. What we have today are medications that can slow down the replication of the virus and manage the spread. A cure that can totally kill off this life-threatening virus will be really awesome, right?
Researchers at the University of California in San Francisco recently announced that genome editing might be the answer that we are looking for against HIV. They said with the right tweaking of the genes, a person will be able to keep away the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and keep himself healthy.
The study is based on the case of an HIV patient from Berlin whose HIV infection was eliminated after he received a bone marrow transplant from someone who had resistance to HIV.
Today, there are a number of bone marrow donors that have resistance to HIV and researchers hope they can find out more about the possibility of genome editing as the answer to HIV.
The experiments, research, and studies are ongoing to learn more about this topic so that we can eventually use this method to stop the spread of HIV. Right now, we are not very close to finding a solution, but we are hopefully on the right track.
HIV has stricken several millions of people around the world and treatment for it is quite expensive. Hopefully, this study can change that soon.
