Gonorrhea, pronounced as gone-uh-REE-yuh, is a very prevalent and widespread sexually-transmitted disease. It can cause various problems and complications if not detected and treated right away.
What causes gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is caused by a certain type of bacterium that can thrive in the moist and warm areas of the reproductive system, such as the fallopian tubes, uterus, and cervix in females, and urethra. It can also infect a person's anus, eyes, mouth, and throat.
How does one get infected with gonorrhea?
There are several ways to contract the gonorrhea infection.
1. Oral sex
Men and women who engage in unprotected oral sex are at risk of contracting the infection from a partner who has gonorrhea.
2. Anal sex
Having anal sex is also a way to spread gonorrhea if a partner carries the infection. So, whether you are a male or a female, engaging in anal sex may put you at risk of gonorrhea.
3. Vaginal sex
Having vaginal sex may also get you infected with gonorrhea. A male who has sex with an infected female or a female who has sex with an infected male may contract the infection if protection is not used.
