The California Department of Public Health revealed on Tuesday that the number of sexually-transmitted disease cases in the state has increased.
The statistics involving Syphilis in California
For instance, syphilis rates in California increased by 18% in just one year. Gonorrhea cases jumped by 13% and that is approximately 100 people per 100,000.
Health officials attribute this rise to the lack of awareness and educated on STDs. They believe they should focus on spreading information on STDs, especially among the youth and emphasize the importance of STD testing.
They added that the increase in STD numbers also may mean that more people are now getting tested due to more accessible testing and treatment.
The high-risk group
Another thing to take out from the report is that the increase in STD cases is the highest among the young people, between the ages of 15 years old and 24 years old.
Meanwhile, Chlamydia rates have dropped a bit over the past year. This decrease is the first in over twenty years. Chlamydia is actually the number one most reported STD in California.
Health officials advise everyone to get tested regularly, use condoms, and avoid having multiple sex partners to reduce their risks of STDs.
