A study on Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and pregnancy
A study has found out that women who get infected with Chlamydia or gonorrhea leading up to their pregnancy or while they are pregnant are at risk of suffering from major complications such as premature birth or stillbirth.
Among the thousands of women who participated in the study, about 1% of them were diagnosed with gonorrhea. It was also learned that half of those that were gonorrhea-positive previously suffered from Chlamydia. Those that were positive for gonorrhea or Chlamydia had babies that were either delivered prematurely or stillborn.
There were other factors that made their conditions worse — smoking, age, high blood pressure, diabetes — all these were influential to their increased risks.
The study also concluded that women who were diagnosed with Chlamydia were 17% more prone to having premature births and had 40% more chance of getting stillborns.
These numbers might not really jump out and cause so much panic, but there is enough reason to say that having Chlamydia or gonorrhea right before or while being pregnant alters the state of everything. These sexually-transmitted diseases should not be ignored, especially among pregnant women.
It is important that this information is spread and made known to more people so that everyone can put more effort into being more responsible with their lifestyle and choices. Having an STD is a huge problem that needs to be solved at the earliest opportunity.
