The majority of people tend to use corresponding or alternate treatments along with the medical care they are receiving from their doctor. These are known as corresponding as they are used with the standard care one receives. However, they may also be called alternate, as they do not fit into the mainstream of western ways or viewing health care and medicine. Common corresponding therapies can include:
- Relaxation techniques – visualization and meditation
- Herbal medicines – from plants
- Physical therapies – (body) massage and yoga
With the majority of corresponding therapies, one health is usually viewed holistically. If you look at your body as a whole, everything you do, drink, eat, and the things you stress on do affect your well-being and health.
Are These Safe?
Generally, relaxation and physical therapies are safe. However, those that consist of herbs, vitamins, and other supplements may be dangerous for someone suffering from liver disease. It is always best to talk to your GP prior to taking such supplements alongside your medical treatment. Taking corresponding therapies does not mean you stop the medications because this is no way correct.
Do These Work?
There is not enough research that reports this even though many people do say they feel better and get positive results using alternative treatments. Healthy individuals use corresponding therapies in order to make their immune systems stronger and to feel better in general. Individuals with illnesses or diseases also use these for the same reason and to cope better with the side effects and symptoms of medicines they are taking to treat the illness.
Physical Therapies – Body
Physical therapies are also known as body therapies and include several activities, such as massage, energy healing, aromatherapy, and yoga. Such therapies focus on one’s body and senses in order to promote well-being and healing.
There are two types of energy healing therapies, which are known as:
- Therapeutic Touch
Therapeutic Touch is where a practitioner skilled in the therapy smooth’s out the energy field of a client without having any contact with them. The goal of the therapy is to help arouse the client’s inborn healing procedures.
The Reiki therapy involves a practitioner experienced in the therapy to lightly touch the body of a patient or hold their hands slightly over it. It is thought that energy flows through the areas that are most in need of healing. Many people having the Reiki therapy report a peaceful sense of relaxation and others have also reported a reduction in:
Relaxation therapies like visualization and meditation focus on how one’s imagination and mind may promote overall well-being and health.
Herbal medicines refer to those substances that are obtained from plants. These can be taken from almost any part of the plant, including:
These may also be used as herbs for cooking, which pose no threat. However, the larger amounts that are usually sold as medicines are the ones that can be risky.
