What medicines are prescribed for Chlamydia infection?

The common antibiotics used to treat Chlamydia infection are Azithromycin and doxycycline. These antibiotics are powerful enough that 95% of the time, the infection gets cleared in a matter of days. Not everyone can take Azithromycin and doxycycline though hence before taking this drug, ask your doctor first. If you think you have symptoms of Chlamydia infection, do not just take Azithromycin and doxycycline because your symptoms might actually mean different condition. Remember that most sexually transmitted diseases have common symptoms.

Side effects of Azithromycin and doxycycline

Almost all medicines in the world have side effects. If a certain drug causes too much discomfort, ask your doctor to change it. As for Azithromycin and doxycycline, the common side effects are trouble breathing, having a swollen lips, tongue and face and throat. Other side effects also include hives and slow and irregular heart rate plus cramps and feeling weak. If these occur more than the patient can handle, seek medical attention immediately. Also, if the patient is experiencing fever or having swollen legs and hands, medical attention might be needed.

If there is a need to be outside, keep your body protected with long sleeves, pants, and jackets. Applying sunblock or sun skin protection lotion is highly encouraged. It also strongly discouraged to have sexual contact during the duration of the treatment. Men who are undergoing Chlamydia treatment should not risk having sexual contact both for anal or oral. If there is a chance that this cannot be followed, protect yourself and your partner and use condoms.

After Chlamydia treatment

After the duration of the treatment, it is best to get tested again for Chlamydia. Doing follow up tests is highly encouraged to make sure that you are 100% Chlamydia-free. Keep a list of your medications too and always ask your doctor about the timely result of your tests. Chlamydia is not a life-threatening sexually transmitted disease but if it is taken for granted, it can develop into something serious complications in the future. Antibiotics are not that expensive either so there is no reason for you to discontinue your medication halfway. Remember that not taking the prescribed medicines at the prescribed time would not help you clear your Chlamydia infection.
